Construction is scheduled to start in July on an estimated $6.3 million project in Kent to repave about a 1-mile stretch of Central Avenue South.

The street has many cracks, rutting and patches and needs an asphalt overlay. Crews will repair the street from Willis Street south to near South 262nd Street. The project also includes new sidewalks, curbs and gutters.

Residents can find out more about the project at a public meeting from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 27, at the Kent Senior Activity Center, 600 E. Smith St.

Kent will pay for the project with $2.2 million from the city’s business and occupation tax, a $1.8 million federal grant, $1.7 million from the city’s water fund and $600,000 from the city’s sewer fund. New waterlines and protective lining for the sewer lines is part of the project.

Central Avenue will remain open during construction but temporary lane closures may be necessary at various locations. Crew will remove trees to replace the sidewalks damaged by tree roots. Crews will plant new trees that have a smaller root system that won’t damage sidewalks.

Driveways will be impacted during construction for the demolition and replacement of the sidewalk and driveways. The city’s contractor will coordinate with businesses to maintain access at all times.

Work is expected to be finished by June 2016.
