Drivers can expect delays along Pacific Highway South on Kent’s West Hill over the next few months as crews repair and plant center medians between South 240th Street and South 272nd Street.

Crews will close left lanes as needed to safely repair and plant the medians. The closures start on Monday, June 6 and will continue through September from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays.

The Kent City Council approved the $1 million project last year to replace the busted-up, weed-infested medians to help make the area more attractive for businesses and residents along the highway. The city will pay for the project with business and occupation tax funds.

Crews will replace existing vegetation with new topsoil, a new irrigation system and new plants. The medians will feature rock-covered areas on each tip with flowering plants covering the rest. The city installed the medians in 2006.

No work will be done on medians between South 240th Street and Kent-Des Moines Road because of Sound Transit’s plans to build a new light rail station along the highway just north of South 240th for operation by 2023.

Renton-based Road Construction Northwest, Inc., will do the work.
