Kent Police arrested a 22-year-old woman for investigation of taking a motor vehicle without permission Oct. 12 even before the owner knew his car had even been taken.

A Kent officer had transported a teenager back to her home in Auburn from Kent at about 5:30 a.m. Oct. 12. When the officer began his return to Kent, he spotted an orange Nissan reaching speeds of up to 50 mph in a 25 mph zone near the 1400 block of 16th Street Northeast in Auburn, according to the police report. The officer followed the vehicle into a parking lot of town homes near 18th Street Northeast and M Street Northeast, about 3 miles south of Kent.

The woman driver, who was alone in the car, started to walk away from the vehicle when the officer asked her to stop. The woman told the officer the car belonged to her aunt, who lived in a nearby town home.

A check of the car’s license plate showed the car registered to a man in Pacific, west of Auburn. Pacific Police went to the man’s home to alert him. That’s when the man realized the car was missing from where he had parked it by his house.

The officer searched the woman and discovered she had several car keys in her pockets. The keys, many of them filed or shaved, were designed for Nissan, Honda, Jeep and Ford vehicles. The officer noted in the report that car thieves often use “jiggler” keys to help pick a lock.

The officer also found mail in the Nissan that had been taken from an Auburn woman in an earlier vehicle prowl.

The Pacific man took his car back home. Some damage reportedly had been done to the car’s ignition.

Assault

A Kent man allegedly punched his girlfriend in the shoulder during a dispute at about 8:55 p.m. Oct. 12 at a bar in the 1400 block of Central Avenue South.

Police arrested the man at his nearby home for investigation of fourth-degree assault.

The girlfriend told police her boyfriend had argued with her female friend in the bar. The girlfriend told her boyfriend not to yell at her friend. The boyfriend became angry and punched his girlfriend in the shoulder. The girlfriend then pushed her boyfriend out of the bar.

Officers found the boyfriend at his home. He told police he had hit his girlfriend on the arm after an argument.

The female friend of the girlfriend told police that the boyfriend had asked the two women if they were sleeping with each other.
