A Kent Police dog tracked down a man hiding in a wooded swamp area after he ran from officers following a traffic stop.

The man kicked the dog and tried to run away again before the dog grabbed him by the thigh in the woods near the intersection of South 272nd Street and 16th Avenue South near the city of Kent border with Des Moines and Federal Way, according to the police report. Police arrested the man, 43, for investigation of obstructing an officer, harming a police dog and driving while license suspended.

The man told officers he ran because he has warrants and he didn’t want to go to jail. The incident began at about 10:59 p.m. on Feb. 28 when an officer spotted a pickup with an expired license plate traveling eastbound on South 268th Street and then south on Pacific Highway South.

The officer activated his vehicle’s overhead emergency lights and the driver pulled over into the Safeway parking lot but then kept the truck rolling past several stopping points. The officer activated his siren and the driver suddenly stopped the vehicle.

Because of the strange behavior by the driver, the officer said he asked the man to put his hands outside of the truck’s window. The man kept pulling his hands in and out of the truck, so the officer pulled out his gun and ordered the man out of the truck. The man got out but then ran through the parking lot.

Paramedics treated the man for a couple of dog bites to his leg and transported him to Valley Medical Center for treatment. Officers later picked up the man at the hospital and took him to the city jail. The police dog sustained a minor cut on the face.

Man lies about his name

Police arrested a 19-year-old man for investigation of making a false statement, possession of vehicle prowl tools and being a minor in possession of marijuana after responding to a report of a suspicious man and vehicle at about 5:59 p.m. on Feb. 26 in the 20100 block of 93rd Place South.

A caller told 911 that a tow truck had dropped off a vehicle in front of a house and then someone covered the vehicle with a tarp. A man worked on another car near the covered vehicle, according to the police report.

Officers noted the house is known to often have stolen vehicles, stolen property, drugs and people with warrants. Police spotted a man working on a vehicle outside the house. The man reportedly gave two false names to police before they were able to obtain his actual name.

The man said he knew nothing about the tarp-covered vehicle that a tow truck had just dropped off. When officers arrested the man for giving a false name, they searched him and found shaved car keys in his pocket – the type of keys used to steal cars. He also had a plastic baggie of marijuana in his pockets. The man declined to answer further questions from the police.

Man caught camping in city park

Officers arrested a man for illegal camping after finding him wrapped up in a sleeping bag at about 10:22 a.m. on Feb. 26 in a park gazebo at 201 Railroad Ave. N.

Officers on patrol spotted the man covered up in a sleeping bag and asked him to wake up, according to the police report. The man woke up and told police he didn’t have any identification on him. The man also had a marijuana water bong near his sleeping bag.

Police cited the man for having open marijuana in public view and banned the man for 45 days from city parks and facilities.

Brother punches sister during dispute

Police arrested a 19-year-old man for investigation of fourth-degree assault after he allegedly punched his 17-year-old sister in the face multiple times during a dispute at about 6:53 p.m. on Feb. 28 at a house in the 4300 block of South 220th Street.

The sister told officers she was doing homework on the dining room table when her brother became upset that she was sitting in his spot, according to the police report. The girl told officers her brother had Asperger syndrome and had been depressed lately. The sister had a bump on her head from the dispute.
