The Seattle Thunderbirds came back from two two-goal deficits, scored on a penalty shot with 29 seconds left to tie the game and then scored in overtime Friday night for a 5-4 victory over the Medicine Hat Tigers at the Medicine Hat Arena.

The T-Birds were down 4-3 late in the third period when they pulled goalie Danny Mumaugh for an extra attacker. The T-Birds were pressing around the net when a Medicine Hat player covered the puck in the crease with his hand. The referee awarded a penalty shot, giving the T-Birds the chance to tie the game and send it to overtime.

Seattle sent out Mathew Barzal to take the penalty shot. Barzal stickhandled towards Medicine Hat goalie Daniel Wapple, faked left, brought the puck back right and put it in the top right corner over the goalie.

The T-Birds started overtime strong and a good forecheck by Seth Swenson and Mitch Elliot helped win the game for the T-Birds. Swenson forced a turnover in the right corner. He brought the puck out of the corner and crashed the net. Wapple made the save but Elliot was on top of the crease and banged the rebound past the goalie for the winning goal.

It was Elliot’s first game of the season. He returned on Tuesday from the Training Camp of the Utica Comets of the AHL.

Seth Swenson chipped the puck to center ice and right to Justin Hickman for a breakaway. Hickman came down on Wapple and beat the goalie low on the glove side.

Shinkaruk got the Tigers the two-goal lead back at 17:48 of the first with a power-play goal. Tyler Lewington and Valk had the assists.
