{"id":10892,"date":"2011-07-02T18:55:33","date_gmt":"2011-07-03T01:55:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spiken.wpengine.com\/news\/kent-and-covington-students-receive-becu-scholarships\/"},"modified":"2016-10-22T15:10:37","modified_gmt":"2016-10-22T22:10:37","slug":"kent-and-covington-students-receive-becu-scholarships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kentreporter.com\/news\/kent-and-covington-students-receive-becu-scholarships\/","title":{"rendered":"Kent and Covington students receive BECU scholarships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.becu.org\/Default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">BECU, a Washington credit union<\/a>, awarded $2,500 scholarships for exceptional community service by graduating high school seniors and undergraduate students.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>In Covington, Yasaman Azodi was scholarship recipient.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>In Kent, Joshua Kutterer, Payton Jones and Cameron Halversen were among the recipients to win a scholarship from BECU.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>The students were selected by a volunteer selection committee of local business, educational and nonprofit leaders based on a combination of strong dedication to community service, leadership and academics.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>The foundation received more than 600 scholarship applications from BECU student members.\u00a0 Applicants were required to submit hours of community service, grade point, transcripts and letters of recommendation, as well as essays describing their most meaningful service experiences.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Yasaman Azodi &#8211; University of Washington<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><p>Volunteer at Arbor Village Retirement &amp; Assisted Living Community<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>After describing her first day at Arbor Village as the scariest day of her life, six years later she has hundreds of both wonderful and heartbreaking stories and a determination to major in biochemistry and attend medical school where she can study genetics in hopes of learning more about the effects of DNA and the brain.\u00a0 She hopes someday to play a part in helping those at Arbor Village remember her and those they love.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Joshua Kutterer &#8211;
