For the second week in a row, the Kentridge High boys swim team held steady.

Standouts Cameron Whiting and Chase Bublitz continued to do their thing, leading the Chargers to a second-place finish at the West Central District meet at Rogers High in Puyallup. Beamer swam away with the meet, racking up 193 points, followed well in the distance by the Chargers at 152 and third-place Central Kitsap and Gig Harbor, which tied at 140.

After Kentridge, Kentlake was the only other Kent School District program to crack the top 10. The Falcons grabbed a seventh-place finish with 118 points; Kent-Meridian finished in 14th with 15 points while Kentwood grabbed 16th with 14 total points.

It was the second second-place finish for the Chargers in as many weeks. Kentridge also finished second to Beamer at the league meet, which was held a week earlier. And, as they have all season, Whiting and Bublitz continued to pace the field. Whiting, a senior, won the 50 free with a state qualifying time of 22.41. He was followed closely by Bublitz, who took second in the event with a state-qualifying time of 22.49. While Whiting was able to grab gold in the 50 free, Bublitz did the same in the 100 free, creating his own wake with a time of 49.06.

Kentridge also received a second-place finish in the 400 free relay (3:22.43) and a third-place finish by Whiting in the 500 free (4:56.90).

Kentlake’s Tanner Keeling-Garcia was just was good as Whiting and Bublitz. Keeling-Garcia torched the field in the 100-yard breaststroke, touching out in a first-place, state-qualifying time of 1:01.87. Keeling-Garcia also earned a second-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly (54.25).

Kentlake’s 200 free relay team (Erik Fulmer, Christian Knobloch, David Dougherty and Keeling-Garcia) also swam to a third-place finish (1:32.75).

ALSO: Matt Bailey was Kent-Meridian’s top placer, taking fourth in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.61. Bailey will represent the Royals at state on Feb. 18-19 at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way. … Kentwood’s top finisher was Kevin Molloy, who took seventh in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:06.01. Molloy and teammate Jesse Dehnert, a diver, both will compete at state.
