Kent psychotherapist Linda Herman believes that guilt is a mother’s occupational hazard. Herman will address the issue of parental guilt and other parenting challenges at the Fly into Recovery Family Wellness Retreat, a community health forum hosted by Guided Pathways – Support for Youth and Families.

The retreat is Friday, March 29 from 8:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Camp Berachah, 19830 SE 328th Place, Auburn.

Kent-based Guided Pathways works to support parents and children struggling with emotional, behavioral and/or substance abuse challenges by providing one-to-one parent peer support, parent classes and family social events for King County children and youth, their caregivers, parents and family members.

“I have talked to women around the country,” Herman said. “Mothers feel guilty for doing too much and guilty for doing too little for their children; guilty for having worked outside the home and guilty for not having worked; guilty for divorcing their child’s dad and guilty for staying. And what’s most distressing is that they sometimes feel guilty when their adult children are upset with them, even when they have no idea what they have done.”

Herman, who has practiced psychotherapy in Kent for 15 years, wrote the book, “Parents to the End: How Baby Boomers Can Parent for Peace of Mind, Foster Responsibility in their Adult Children, and Keep their Hard-Earned Money.” She is experienced in helping parents who want to learn how to better deal with difficulties moms and dads face today in preparing children for life’s inevitable challenges.

Herman is a featured speaker along with Paul Weatherly, Bellevue College director of Alcohol/Drug Counseling Program. Weatherly is scheduled to talk about marijuana legalization and the implications for parents and youth at 2:15 p.m.

GPS staff will be on hand to answer questions and provide printed materials and other resources.

A low-cost lunch is available for those who register for both the morning and afternoon presentations.
