A 7-year-old Kent boy died Saturday after he flew off a sled into a Snoqualmie Pass roadway and was hit by a car.

Jacob D. Ponce-Espinoza was hit at about 2:21 p.m. Saturday, according to a Washington State Patrol media release. He was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where he died at about 4 p.m. Saturday.

Ponce-Espinoza was riding on a sled with his family as they headed up the Mountaineer Lodge driveway to a designated sledding area, said Lt. Scott Martin, a State Patrol spokesman.

“The sled had a rope attached to it and somehow the rope came unattached,” Martin said. “His father was not able to stop him.”

The boy was ejected from the sled after it hit a berm and landed on State Route 906, a two-lane road that parallels Interstate 90. A 54-year-old Bellevue man driving a 2005 Toyota Camry collided with the boy.

“It doesn’t appear there will be any charges being filed in connection with this accident,” Martin said. “It doesn’t appear the driver could have avoided the child.”
