The city of Kent will host an open house for people to learn about a proposed salmon restoration and flood risk reduction project at the Downey Farmstead along Frager Road.

The open house runs from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5 at the first floor conference rooms at the Centennial Building, 400 W. Gowe St.

The city obtained grants to purchase the property and design a salmon habitat restoration project near the Green River. The Washington Salmon Recovery Funding Board kicked in a grant of $253,851 to the project.

According to project manager Beth Tan, the city proposes to construct a side channel which will create summer rearing habitat and a high flow refuge for multiple endangered salmon species including Chinook, steelhead and bull trout.

“Side channels along the river also provide extra flood storage for those high water flows, reducing the risk of flooding in the area,” said Tan. “We hope residents in the area will be interested what we’re doing, and give us their feedback.”
