After taking third and fourth respectively at the last two Class 4A state volleyball tournaments, Kentwood High had big designs on going even further this past weekend at the Toyota Center in Kennewick.
The Conquerors didn't quite surpass their last two state performances, but certainly came home with plenty to be proud of.
The opportunities were there for the Kentwood High girls soccer team Wednesday night.
The goals were not.
The Kentwood High football team had all the answers for seven straight weeks.
Those answers became questions on Saturday night at Issaquah High in the opening round of the Class 4A state playoffs.
And the biggest question of all quickly became how to stop — or at least slow down — Issaquah running back Grant Gellatly.

It has been a long time since a Royal jersey has graced the field at the state 4A cross country championships.
Not since 2002 – when the Kent-Meridian boys led by Joe Timeus took sixth-place – have Royal runners qualified for state.
Mono forced the hand of Aaron Radford.
But Kentwood’s girls soccer coach certainly had a nice deck from which to choose at the beginning of the season, when he learned starting goalkeeper Courtney Johnson would miss some time with mononucleosis.
It was a 5-7-8 finish for the Tahoma boys cross country team this past Saturday, as the Bears ran to the Westside Classic 4A boys district meet title at American Lake Golf Course in Lakewood.
The look changed.
But the results remained the same for the Kentwood High volleyball team on Saturday in the South Puget Sound League championship match against Rogers.
The Kentwood football team was in need of an offensive spark last Friday night at French Field.
Down 7-6 in the third quarter against Kentlake in what amounted to a survival game for a South Puget Sound League playoff berth, the Conquerors needed something — anything.
Chelsea Bailey hasn’t even gotten to this year’s state girls swim meet yet, since it’s not until next weekend.
But the Kentlake High sophomore already has swum faster than one state record — and darn near did it in two events during last Saturday’s Class 4A West Central District meet.
Plenty of new faces have graced the Kentwood volleyball court during the last four years. The program’s unmatched success, however, has continued.
Another week, another hero.
That proved to be the case again Friday night at French Field for the Kentwood football team.
Perfection eluded the Kentwood girls soccer team last Thursday night.
Another top-notch defensive performance and a league championship did not.
Courtney Johnson and Megan Walburn combined for their 12th consecutive shutout, but it was in a 0-0 South Puget Sound League North Division tie against rival Tahoma at French Field.
