The Portland Winterhawks defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 2-1 in a Western Hockey League game Saturday night at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
Seattle goalie Blake Lyda was very strong in net, making 36 saves to keep his team in the game.
Lyda was pulled for an extra attacker with 1:29 left in the game. Matthew Wedman and Andrej Kukuca each had a good scoring chance but Portland goalie Joel Hofer stopped them both and then iced puck with 22 seconds left in the game and called timeout. Seattle kept six skaters on the ice and kept the pressure on but coudld not get the tying goal.
Portland (10-3-0-1) took a 1-0 lead on a goal by John Ludvig at 8:54 of the first period.
The Winterhawks went in front 2-0 at 5:52 of the second period on a goal by Reece Newkirk.
Seattle (5-7-2-1) cut the Portland lead to one on an unassisted goal from Alex Morozoff at 13:21 of the second. Morozoff got a loose puck in front of the Portland net and beat goalie Joel Hofer high for his second goal of the season.
Returning home
The T-Birds return to the accesso ShoWare Center on Friday, Nov. 8 to take on the Kamloops Blazers at 7:35 p.m. It’s the team’s second Dave and Buster’s Pub Night of the season. Fans can get 10 tickets, 10 beers and 10 hats for $220. To purchase the special, call the T-Birds at 253-239-PUCK (7825).
Single-game tickets are on sale online on the T-Birds website and at the ShoWare box office.
Fans who purchase the 24-flex ticket package will be able to select any available premium seat for any game, in any ticket combination, during the 2019-20 season.
