Time for Week 2 of the Xpressbet Washington Cup at Emerald Downs, and this time 2-year-olds take center stage for a Sunday doubleheader featuring the $50,000 Washington Cup Juvenile presented by Elysian Brewing Company and the $50,000 Washington Cup Juvenile Filly presented by Pegasus Training & Rehabilitation.
Both races are 6½ furlongs in distance, and both drew fields of 10. If all 20 horses start, it would boost the average stakes field size to 8.5 this season.
Scott Stevens, who has enjoyed tremendous success in limited action this season at Emerald Downs, rides Harbors Rule for trainer Chris Stenslie in the Juvenile Colt & Gelding. Harbors Rule and Stevens nearly pulled of a 31-to-1 upset in the WTBOA Lads three weeks ago, but were tagged by Muncey in the final jumps of the six-furlong stakes. Improving with every start, Harbors Rule (Harbor the Gold-Felice the Cat)is a full brother to Trackattacker, who won this race by 9¼-lengths as a 1 to 20 favorite in 2014, accounting for over $520,000 of a record $554,000 show pool.
Stevens is 5-3-2 in 15 starts at the meet including three stakes wins. He rode 5-year-old mare No Talking Back to a pair of stakes wins for Stenslie, and 3-year-old filly Alittlelesstalk to a victory in the Washington Cup Sophomore Filly last week.
In the Juvenile Filly, Windy Point, You Go Girl and For You Only – second, third and fourth in the Barbara Shinpoch Stakes three weeks ago – square off at 6½ furlongs. Windy Point is 1-2-0 in three starts with earnings of $30,677, and has fired in all three starts including seconds to For You Only in the Angie C Stakes and Cakewalk in the Barbara Shinpoch.
