The Weakend Warriors are back on the tennis court.
The Kent-based men’s team, which finished second in the United States Tennis Association Adult League National Championships last fall, will take another run at it beginning today at the sectionals in Portland.
The Warriors are moving up from 2.5 to the 3.0 level. The USTA ability rating system ranges from 1.5 (beginners) to 7.0 (world-class players. They are one of six teams in their bracket at sectionals.
Last year, the Warriors won their first four matches at nationals in Indian Wells, Calif., before falling to the Caribbean team in the finals, 2-1.
Several players from the 2007 squad – Dan Benoit, Brad Belmondo, David Herron and Darren Griffin – are back. Jim Thorp, the captain of last year’s team, is injured and not playing this time. Thorp, however, still is serving as co-captain, along with Benoit.
