The Tri-City Americans defeated the Seattle 3-1, snapping the Thunderbirds’ seven-game winning streak Friday night at the Toyota Center in Kennewick.
The T-Birds take on the Everett Silvertips at 7:05 tonight at the ShoWare Center in their annual Fred Meyer Teddy Bear Toss game. A capacity crowd is expected as fans look to throw bears and other stuffed animals on the ice after the T-Birds first goal. The bears and stuffed animals are collected by the WARM 106.9 FM Teddy Bear Patrol and given to police and fire departments who give them to children in times of emergency and crisis.
The T-Birds host the Kelowna Rockets at 5:05 p.m. to finish out the weekend.
Tri-City (24-21-2-2) took a 1-0 lead on a shorthanded goal from Beau McCue at 12:24 of the first period. McCue controlled a loose puck at the Americans blue line and skated the length of the ice on a breakaway. McCue beat Seattle goalie Danny Mumaugh high with a backhand move. Parker Wotherspoon had an assist on the goal.
The Americans outshot the T-Birds 7-5 in the first period.
The T-Birds had the Americans pinned in their zone for five to six minutes late in the second period. After clearing the puck out of their zone, the Americans were able to score on a line change. Jackson Playfair cleared the puck to McCue. McCue passed the puck to Devon McAndrews entering the offensive zone. McAndrews beat Mumaugh from the right circle for the goal.
Seattle outshot Tri-City 15-8 in the second period and led 20-15 in shots after two periods.
Braden Purtil extended the Americans’ lead to 3-0 at 6:36 of the third period. Philip Tot and Wotherspoon had the assists.
Seattle (29-15-2-3) got on the board at 11:50 of the third. Mathew Barzal centered the puck to Ethan Bear inside the blue line. Bear took a slap shot that Roberts Lipsbergs tipped past Tri-City goalie Eric Comrie.
The T-Birds pulled Mumaugh late in the third period while on the power play to try and even the score. They had good pressure in the Tri-City zone and forced Comrie to make saves, but there were not able to find the back of the net.
Seattle outshot Tri-City 18-7 in the third period and 38-22 in the game.
Mumaugh stopped 19 of 22 shots and his record is now 13-9-2-3.
Comrie made 37 saves on 38 shots to get the win and improve his record to 21-16-2-2.
