Tri-City downs Seattle Thunderbirds 3-1 | Hockey

The Tri-City Americans beat the Seattle Thunderbirds 3-1 Tuesday in a Western Hockey League game.

The Tri-City Americans scored three first-period goals to defeat the Seattle Thunderbirds 3-1 Tuesday night at the Toyota Center in Kennewick.

Despite the loss, the T-Birds remained in eighth place in the Western Conference playoff standings. They are two points behind the seventh-place Victoria Royals, who lost to the Spokane Chiefs, 4-2 on Tuesday night. The 10th-place Prince George Cougars also lost, 3-2, to the Medicine Hat Tigers and did not gain any ground on the T-Birds. The Everett Silvertips, in ninth place, were idle Tuesday night.

The top eight teams advance to the playoffs.

The T-Birds play the Silvertips at 7:35 p.m. Friday at the Comcast Arena in Everett.

Patrick Holland scored a power-play goal at 3:20 of the first to give the Americans a 1-0 lead. Adam Hughesman and Brendan Shinnimin had the assists.

Connor Rankin put the Americans in front 2-0 at 14:41 of the first. Shinnimin and Holland were credited with the assists.

Tri-City (45-15-1-2) went in front 3-0 at 16:20 of the first on a goal from Justin Feser. Jordan Messier had the only assist.

Tri-City outshot Seattle 20-10 in the first period.

Seattle (21-39-1-1) outshot Tri-City 11-10 in a scoreless second period.

Connor Sanvido cut the Americans lead to two goals at 18:33 of the third period with a power-play goal. Sanvido beat Tri-City goalie Eric Comrie over the blocker with a hard wrist shot. Shea Theodore and Brendan Rouse had the assists.

The Americans finished with a 42-32 advantage in shots on goal.

Seattle goalie Daniel Cotton made 39 saves on 42 shots and his record falls to 0-8-0-0.

Comrie stopped 31 of 32 shots and his record is now 19-5-1-1.
