Tips topple T-Birds Sept. 5

Everett September 5, 2009 – The Everett Silvertips defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 5-1 Saturday night in their second game at the Everett Preseason tournament at Comcast Arena.

Seattle is now 2-1-0-0 in the preseason and plays the Spokane Chiefs on Sunday at 3 p.m. in their third and final game of the tournament. They host the Silvertips at ShoWare Centre on Saturday, September 12, at 7 p.m. in their last preseason game.

Seattle took a 1-0 lead at 5:24 of the first period on a goal by Branden Troock. Lindsay Nielsen got to a loose puck in the neutral zone and sent it up ice to Charles Wells. Wells backhanded the puck across the blue line to Troock who carried it into the right circle. Troock put a wrist shot on goal that beat Everett goalie Kent Simpson low on the blocker side.

Troock was the T-Birds’ first round selection in the 2009 Bantam Draft.

Everett tied the game 1-1 at 18: 28 of the first on a goal by Markus McCrea. Josh Winquist had the only assist on the goal.

Kyle Jahraus replaced Calvin Pickard with 10:07 left in the second period. Pickard made 12 saves on 13 shots.

Everett went up 2-1 at 10:35 of the second period on a goal by Kellan Tochkin. Ryan Murray and Chris de la Lande had the assists.

The Tips increased their lead to two goals when D. Jay McGrath scored at 16:05 of the second. Dale Hunt and Murray had the assists.

Everett led 22-17 in total shots after two periods by outshooting the T-Birds 11-7 in the second period.

The Silvertips went in front 4-1 at 9:23 of the third on a goal by Corey Tyrell. Murray had the only assist.

Everett scored their final goal at 18:39 of the third on a goal by Winquist. Ryan White and de la Lande had the assists.

Everett outshot Seattle 39-22 in the game.

Jahraus made 22 saves on 26 shots.

Simpson played the whole game and made 21 saves on 22 shots.

The T-Birds will open the 2009-10 Western Hockey League regular season with back-to-back home games against the Silvertips on Friday, September 18, at 7:35 p.m. and the Portland Winterhawks on Saturday, September 19, at 7:05 p.m. Both games are at ShoWare Center in Kent.

T-Birds single game tickets for the 2009-10 season are available online at the T-Birds website and at the ShoWare Center box office. The ShoWare Center Box Office is open Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday game days at 10 a.m. and Sunday game days at noon.

T-Birds season tickets are currently on sale. Season tickets can be purchased by calling the T-Birds office at 253-239-7825.
