For the Reporter
Goalie David Tendeck made 49 saves to lead the Vancouver Giants to a 2-1 overtime win over the Seattle Thunderbirds at the Langley Events Centre in British Columbia on Friday night.
The T-Birds play the Portland Winterhawks in back-to-back games this weekend. The two teams are at the accesso ShoWare Center for a 6:05 p.m. game Saturday. The rivals move to Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Sunday for a 5 p.m. puck drop. Both games will be televised on JOEtv on Channel 22/Cable 110 in Seattle. Ian Furness and Andy Johnson will have the call of both games.
On Friday, Vancouver (29-17-5-3) took a 1-0 lead at 6:13 of the second period on a goal from Ty Ronning. Davis Koch and Brayden Watts had the assists.
The T-Birds outshot the Giants 19-4 in the second period and led 34-15 in shots after two periods.
Seattle (27-18-6-2) tied the game 1-1 at 10:27 of the third period. Austin Strand passed the puck up the right wing to Payton Mount. Mount slipped the puck to Noah Philp in the neutral zone to create a 2-on-1 break with Samuel Huo. Philp skated at Tendeck and beat the goalie over the glove with a snap shot for his 12th goal of the year.
The assist was Mount’s first point as a T-Bird. Mount was the T-Birds’ first-round pick in the 2017 Bantam Draft.
The T-Birds had a 49-19 advantage in shots after three periods by outshooting the Giants 15-4 in the third period.
Ronning won the game 1:42 into overtime when he forced a turnover to create a breakaway. Ronning beat Seattle goalie Liam Hughes just under the cross bar.
Hughes finished the game with 19 saves on 21 shots and his record is 10-6-3-1.
Tendeck’s record is now 20-10-2-2.
Single-game tickets for the season are on sale on the T-Birds website and at the ShoWare box office.
