The Seattle Thunderbirds came back from a two-goal deficit in the third period Nov. 9 to beat the Saskatoon Blades 5-4 in a shootout at the Credit Union Centre in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
T-Birds center Luke Lockhart scored a goal in each period of the game to get the T-Birds’ second hat trick of the season. Marcel Noebels scored the tying goal late in the third period and had the only goal in the shootout to get the T-Birds the win.
The game was tied 4-4 after regulation and overtime.
Saskatoon elected to shoot first in the shootout and sent out Jake Trask. Seattle goalie Calvin Pickard came out and challenged Trask and poke-checked the puck away from the Blades center. Travis Toomey, a former Blade, was the T-Birds first shooter in the shootout. Toomey came down on Saskatoon goalie Adam Morrison and shot a bit high and wide.
Marek Viedensky was the second Saskatoon shooter. Viedensky shot over the cross bar with Pickard coming out to challenge him. Burke Gallimore was the T-Birds second shooter but his attempt was denied by Morrison’s left pad.
Ryan Olsen was chosen as the Blades third shooter. Olsen came down on Pickard and made a move to his left but the Seattle goalie kicked out his right leg and stopped Olsen’s attempt. Noebels, a left hand shot, was the T-Birds third shooter. He came down on Morrison, faked a move to his backhand which made Morrison move to the goalie’s right. He then brought the puck back to his forehand and put the puck into an empty net. Noebels is 4-for-7 on shootout attempts this season.
Seattle (7-4-2-3) took 1-0 lead at 2:53 of the third period on a goal by Lockhart. Brenden Dillon had the only assist on the goal. Dillon rushed up the left side with the puck and then centered it to Lockhart in the crease and re directed it past Saskatoon Blades goalie Adam Morrison.
Saskatoon (13-5-0-1) tied the game 1-1 on a power-play goal from Curtis Hamilton at 7:02 of the first period. Josh Nicholls and Viedensky had the assists.
The Blades took a 2-1 lead at 6:44 of the second period on a goal by Stefan Elliott. Chris Collins and Duncan Siemens had the assists.
Lockhart tied the game 2-2 with a power-play goal at 8:52 of the second. Dillon had the puck at the left point. He centered it to Colin Jacobs at the high point. Jacobs put a slap shot on goal that rebounded off Morrison to Lockhart in the left circle. Lockhart one-timed the rebound over Morrison’s blocker.
Saskatoon went back in front 3-2 at 13:39 of the second on a second goal from Hamilton. Viedensky had the only assist on the goal.
The Blades extended the lead to two goals at 14:42 of the second when Brent Benson scored. Teigan Zahn and Matej Stransky assisted on the goal.
Saskatoon outshot Seattle 16-10 in the second period and led 24-17 in total shots after two periods.
The T-Birds cut the Blades’ lead to one goal at 3:30 of the third period on Lockhart’s third goal of the game. Charles Wells sent the puck behind the Blades goal to Lockhart. Lockhart came around the left post and stuffed a wraparound shot past Morrison’s left pad. Gallimore had the second assist on the goal.
Noebels tied the game 4-4 when he scored a power-play goal at 13:55 of the third. Gallimore took a shot from the left circle that rebounded off Morrison right to Noebels at face off dot in the right circle. Noebels one-timed the rebound and beat a lunging Morrison into the right top corner. Dillon the second assist to give him three points in the game.
Saskatoon outshot Seattle 12-8 in the third period and led 36-25 in shots after 60 minutes.
Seattle outshot Saskatoon 2-0 in the overtime period.
Pickard made 32 saves on 36 shots and improves his record to 7-4-2-3.
Morrison stopped 23 of 27 shots and his record is now 6-4-0-1.
The T-Birds finish out their six-game road trip through the East Division against the Regina Pats on Friday, November 12, and Swift Current Broncos on Saturday, November 13.
Their next home game is Friday, Nov. 19, against the Everett Silvertips at 7:35pm at ShoWare Center.
