Seattle Thunderbirds general manager Russ Farwell today announced that left wing Roberts Lipsbergs has joined Team Latvia for the 2013 World Junior Championship in Ufa, Russia.

Latvia is in Group A along with Sweden, Finland, Switzerland and the Czech Republic at the tournament. Group B consists of the United States, Canada, Russia, Germany and Slovakia.

The preliminary rounds are Dec. 26-31; relegation and playoff Jan. 2-5.

Lipsbergs is tied for the team lead in scoring with 32 points on 17 goals and 15 assists. He has 15 goals and seven assists in the last 15 games which includes an 11-game point streak, the longest point streak of the season so far for a T-Bird.

He was selected in the first round, 60th overall, in the 2012 Import Draft. Last season he played 58 games for HK Riga in the Russian Junior League and had 28 points on 14 goals and 14 assists.

Lipsbergs represented Latvia at the 2012 World Junior Championship in Calgary and Edmonton. He had two goals and an assist in six games. He also played for Latvia at the U-18 World Championships this past summer. In six games Lipsbergs had four goals and two penalty minutes. He was an assistant captain for Team Latvia at the U-18 tournament.

The T-Birds take on the Tri-City Americans at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday at the ShoWare Center. They are then off for nine days before returning to home ice on Dec. 28 for the first game of a home-and-home series with the Everett Silvertips.
