Coach Matt O’Dette will join Chris Francis to educate fans each Friday

Seattle Thunderbirds coach Matt O’Dette will join KIRO 7 sports director Chris Francis on a weekly hockey segment on evening sportscasts called Hockey 101.

Each week Francis and O’Dette will use highlights from 2020 NHL Playoff games to educate and inform sports fans on different facets of hockey, according to a Kent-based Seattle Thunderbirds press release.

The first segment to be broadcast will cover “Goals” and will air on the KIRO 7 evening newscast on Friday, Sept. 4, at approximately 5:45 p.m. New segments will air on Fridays each week around the same time for the next several months.

The weekly segments will introduce sports fans to aspects of hockey that include roster makeup, line changes, faceoffs, icing, offsides, penalties, special teams, coaching, hockey fundamentals, hockey terminology, position responsibilities and player training.

When possible, Francis hopes to use 2020 NHL Playoffs highlights that spotlights Western Hockey League U.S. Division alumni, the division the T-Birds compete in. The WHL had a total of 125 alumni compete in the 2020 NHL Playoffs.

WHL season postponed until Dec. 4

The WHL announced in August an adjusted start of Friday, Dec. 4, for the 2020-21 regular season. Games typically begin in September. The T-Birds play home games at the accesso ShoWare Center in Kent.
