T-Birds, Broncos swap players; Barzal to play for Team Canada

The Seattle Thunderbirds have acquired left wing Tyler Adams from the Swift Current Broncos in exchange for right wing MacKenzie Wight, general manager Russ Farwell announced Thursday.

Adams has one goal and six assists for seven points in 25 games this season with the Broncos. In two seasons with the Broncos, a 6-foot-2, 194-pounder from Regina, Saskatchewan, has played in 97 games and has seven goals and 13 assists.

Wight appeared in six games with the T-Birds this season and did not register a point.

Elsewhere

Hockey Canada, in partnership with the Canadian Hockey League, has selected T-Birds center Mathew Barzal as one of 22 players who will play for Team Canada at the 2017 World Junior Championship, Dec. 26-Jan. 5, in Toronto and Montreal. Barzal played for Canada in the 2016 World games in Helsinki, Finland, producing a goal and two assists in five games.

Barzal has 19 points on two goals and 17 assists in 13 games this season since returning from the New York Islanders. The Islanders selected Barzal in the first round, 16th overall, of the 2015 NHL Draft. He appeared in two games with the Islanders this season.

The 22-player Team Canada roster was announced Friday morning. There are seven players from the WHL on the Team Canada roster. Barzal had 27 goals and 61 assists for 88 points in 58 games last season. He has played 174 games and has 55 goals and 163 assists for 218 points in four season with the T-Birds. Barzal is in third place on the T-Birds all-time career assists, behind only Glen Goodall (290) and Victor Gervais (237). …

The T-Birds have back-to-back home games this weekend. They play the Prince George Cougars at 7:35 p.m. Friday at the ShoWare Center and take on the Tri-City Americans at 7:05 p.m. on Sunday at the ShoWare Center. Fans may purchase single-game tickets online or at the ShoWare Center box office. Season tickets can be purchased by calling the T-Birds office at 253-239-7825.
