Seattle Thunderbirds center Mathew Barzal and defenseman Ethan Bear made Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team at the U18 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup Aug. 11-16 in Breclav, Czech Republic and Piestany, Slovakia.

Hockey Canada, in partnership with the Canadian Hockey League, announced the 22-player roster Tuesday.

Barzal and Bear took part in Canada’s Summer Under-18 Team selection camp Aug. 2-5 at the Markin MacPhail Centre in Calgary.

“It is great to see both players recognized and selected to the U18 team which is made up of the best 17-year-olds in all of Canada,” said T-Birds general manager Russ Farwell. “We look forward to watching how they do as they represent Canada at the Ivan Hlinka Tournament in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.”

In his rookie season last year, Barzal appeared in 59 games and had 14 goals and 40 assists for 54 points. Barzal was selected by the T-Birds in the first round, 1st overall, in the 2012 Bantam Draft. Barzal is eligible for the 2015 NHL Draft.

Barzal was part of Team Canada’s U-18 National Team that won Bronze at the 2014 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship in Finland this past April. He had three goals and one assist for four points in seven games.

In his rookie season with the T-Birds, Bear played in 58 games and registered six goals and 13 assists, for 19 points. Bear was selected by the T-Birds in the second round, 25th overall, in the 2012 Bantam Draft. Bear is eligible for the 2015 NHL Draft.
