Seattle Thunderbirds center Mathew Barzal and defenseman Ethan Bear have been invited to attend Canada’s Summer Under-18 Team selection camp Aug. 2-5 at the Markin MacPhail Centre in Calgary.
The under-18 team will play in the Memorial of Ivan Hlinka tournament in Piestany, Slovakia, and Breclav, Czech Republic, Aug. 11-16. Barzal and Bear are two of 44 players Hockey Canada has invited to the selection camp.
In his rookie season last year, Barzal appeared in 59 games and had 14 goals and 40 assists for 54 points. Barzal was selected by the T-Birds in the first round, first overall, in the 2012 Bantam Draft. Barzal is eligible for the 2015 NHL Draft.
Barzal was part of Team Canada’s U-18 National Team that won Bronze at the 2014 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship in Finland, in April. He had three goals and one assist for four points in seven games.
In his rookie season with the T-Birds, Bear played in 58 games and registered six goals and 13 assists, for 19 points. Bear was selected by the T-Birds in the second round, 25th overall, in the 2012 Bantam Draft. Bear is eligible for the 2015 NHL Draft.
