Kentlake High’s girls swim team made a statement at the West Central District meet last Saturday at Rogers High in Puyallup, placing a solid second with 150 points behind Gig Harbor’s 169.
The district meet was the final opportunity for swimmers to qualify for state, which is slated for Nov. 12-14 at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.
The Falcons kick started the meet with a second-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay, a group that consists of Emily Tanasse, Katrina Hetrick, Abby Swanson and Taylor Bouffard. Later on, Kentlake tacked on a third-place finish in the 200-free relay with a time 1:43.95.
Tanasse picked up where she left off at the South Puget Sound League meet with several strong individual swims at districts. The freshman touched the wall in third place in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 59.92 and finished fifth in the 100 yard backstroke.
Meanwhile, Kentlake junior Chelsea Bailey helped the team’s cause by winning the 50 free in 23.98 seconds. Bouffard also placed in the 50 free, coming in 10th, adding to Kentlake’s point total.
Bailey didn’t stop there, winning the 100 backstroke in 55.75, though short of the meet record of 54.99 that she set last year.
Kentlake picked up more team points in the 100 back with Taylor Bouffard and Sarah Dougherty finishing eighth and ninth respectively.
The Falcons wrapped up the district meet with another victory, this time in the 400-free relay in a state qualifying time of 3:43:28, thanks to the efforts of Bouffard, Dougherty, Tanasse and Bailey.
In the diving competition Auburn senior Shawna Jordan blew away the competition while Kentwood senior Katie Almon finished 10th and Tahoma senior Annamarie Price finished 12th.
Kentwood finished 10th overall at districts with its best individual showing coming from Shannelle Cayetano, who took sixth in the 50 free and fifth in the 100 free with a time of 56.30. The highlight of the day for Kentwood, however, belonged to its 200-free relay team (Cayetano, Erica Wright, Erika Panzer and Marissa Dyrdahl). The KW contingent delivered a time of 1:44.23, which helped them earn a state berth.
Kentridge’s Emily Mohr also enjoyed a big meet, qualifying for state in the 50-free (24.74) and the 100-free (54.74). In addition, Kent-Meridian star Joanna Wu also enjoyed a big day, taking third in the 200-free (1:55.86) and fourth in the 100-backstroke (59.99). Wu qualified for state in six different events during the season. Swimmers are only allowed to compete in two individual events at the meet. Wu will swim in the 200-free and 100-back.
