She has a need for speed.
As much was evident for Kentridge High sophomore Emily Mohr during this past Saturday’s Class 4A state swim and dive meet at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.
Mohr, who established a new school record in the 50 free just weeks ago, did again at the state meet, though this time it came in the 100 free. The Kentridge standout delivered a 54.61 in the prelims, then turned it up a notch for the finals, touching out in 54.43 en route to a seventh-place finish.
“That was really exciting,” Mohr said. “I was shocked I did so well.”
Mohr added a fifth-place finish in the 50 free with a time of 24.78, which was just a shade slower than what she delivered in the prelims (24.56). Despite placing higher in the 50 free, the end result was a small letdown.
“At first I was a little disappointed with my time (in the 50 free) because it wasn’t as good as the day before,” she said. “Then I realized how much better it was than last year.”
Mohr took 13th at state in the 50 free last year with a time of 15.15.
On Saturday, she was one of just two sophomores in the 50 free. The other, Thomas Jefferson’s Amber Cratsenberg, won the event with a blistering time of 23.87. Kentlake’s Chelsea Bailey, who was the top seed in the event and who clocked the top time in the preliminaries (23.95), was disqualified after a false start.
The future remains bright, Mohr admitted.
“I’m a freestyler and I pretty much always have been,” she said. “I’d love to be in those two events next year. Hopefully I will improve and stand on the first podium (at state). That’s my goal.”
As a team, Kentridge finished with 42 points and tied with Bothell for 17th place.
Mohr, however, wasn’t the lone Charger to make strides on Saturday. In fact, each of Kentridge’s two relay teams — 200 free and 400 free — moved up from their respective preliminary times. The 200-free relay team (Emily Shonka, Flannery Allen, Jacqueline Do and Mohr) entered state seeded 19th. The group turned in a time of 1:44.01, which put them in 13th place. The Chargers’ 400-free relay, comprised of the same four swimmers, also took 13th, touching out in 3:48.17.
Meanwhile, KR diver Amelia Carpenter, a junior, brought home 24th place with 106.80 points.
