Stars start hot but fade in loss to Flash, 6-4

The Tacoma Stars jumped out to an early lead but Monterrey responded to snag a 6-4 Major Arena Soccer League victory Sunday in Mexico.

League-leading scorer Nick Perera notched a hat trick and keeper Danny Waltman had two assists in the loss.

The Flash improved to 18-4 on the season

The Kent-based Stars (11-12) wrap up the regular season Friday, April 12 in Turlock, Caliif., against the Express. in a must-win game to possibly make the playoffs. Kickoff is at p.m. 7:05 p.m. (MASL.tv).

The first of Perera’s three unanswered goals came with 11:27 left in the first quarter on an assist from Waltman. Perera knocked in an unassisted goal with 7:55 to go before Waltman found him for his third goal to close out the scoring in the opening frame.

The only goal of the second quarter was Monterrey’s first of the game and it came unassisted from Enrique Canez.

The Flash scored three straight goals in the third quarter. Edgar Gonzalez scored without the aid of an assist with 7:42 to go. Miguel Vaca found Marco Antonio Tovar with 4:38 remaining to tie the game 3-3. Gonzalez banged home his second of the game, this time with an assist from Edgar Flores, for the 4-3 Monterrey lead heading into the final quarter.

Monterrey added the first two goals of the fourth quarter. The first in the period was from Carlos Farias followed by Franck Tayou. Flores assisted on both goals.

Philip Lund scored off a Perera assist to reach the 6-4 final score.

Monterrey swept the season series, 2-0.

Second quarter – MON Canez 6:38; Penalties – MON Pichardo blue card (kicking) 13:52; TAC Megson blue card (kicking) 13:52.

Third quarter – MON Gonzalez 7:18; MON Tovar (Vaca) 10:22; MON Gonzalez (Flores) 11:36; Penalties – TAC Hanson blue card (handling) 7:18; MON Pichardo blue card (tripping) 7:36.

Fourth quarter – MON Farias (Flores) 3:59; MON Tayou (Flores) 5:56; TAC Lund (Perera) 8:55; Penalties – none.

Shots – Tacoma 6-7-0-2 (15), Monterrey 5-12-14-4 (35)
