Soul Patch took the lead early and held on late for a four-length victory Friday in the featured Scarff Ford Purse for older fillies and mares at Emerald Downs.
With regular rider Joe Crispin aboard, Soul Patch recorded her third win of the meeting while running one-mile in 1:37.99 on a fast track, and paid $7, $4 and $3. Tim McCanna—eight days from his official enshrinement into the Washington Racing Hall of Fame—is the trainer for owner Hern/LePley Racing.
Who’s Calling Now, Gallyn Mitchell riding, challenged the winner into the lane before weakening slightly in the final furlong. Who’s Calling Now easily held second place and paid $7 and $3.40.
Sun City led briefly early before yielding command to Soul Patch, then gave way gradually while finishing third. Ridden by Pedro Terrero, Sun City paid $3.20 for show, and has now finished first, second or third in 21-of-29 starts at Emerald Downs.
Atta Lora, the 8-to-5 betting favorite, finished fourth, followed by Nina Win and Eyes On My Heart.
A 4-year-old Kentucky-bred filly by Perfect Soul, Soul Patch is 3-2-0 in six starts since being re-claimed by McCanna on April 16. Her lifetime record is 7-5-4 in 21 starts with earnings of $39,829.
