The Kent-based Seattle Thunderbirds junior hockey team scored three goals in the last minutes three minutes to beat the Swift Current Broncos 4-2 Tuesday night at the ShoWare Center.
Shea Theodore, Chance Lund and Burke Gallimore each had a goal in the final three minutes of the Western Hockey League game.
The Broncos (11-15-2-1) made the score 1-0 at 13:57 of the first on an unassisted goal by Taylor Vause. Swift Current led 16-10 in shots on goal at the end of the first period.
Seattle (11-12-0-1) tied it 1-1 at 5:14 of the second on a power-play goal by Sean Aschim. Braeden Laroque grabbed the puck in the middle of Broncos zone and passed it to Connor Sanvido at the edge of the left circle. Sanvido sent it to Aschim waiting at the left of the goal line. Aschim attempted a pass across the crease to Kyle Verdino at back door but the puck hit a Swift Current defenseman in the leg and deflected through Broncos goalie Jon Groenheyde’s legs.
The Broncos went ahead 2-1 at 5:58 of the second on a goal by Coda Gordon. Vause and Adam Lowry had the assists.
At 17:11 of the third, the T-Birds tied it 2-2 on a goal by Theodore. Tyler Alos won a face-off and sent it to Theodore at the top of the right circle. Theodore brought the puck to the middle of Bronco zone, just inside the blue line, and put a wrist shot on goal with traffic in front of Groenheyde. The shot beat Groenheyde over the glove.
At 17:46 of the third, the T-Birds went ahead 3-2 on a goal by Lund. Justin Hickman backhanded the puck to Luke Lockhart below the goal line on the left side. Lockhart brought the puck into the left circle and put a shot on goal, but it deflected off of a Bronco skate and back to Hickman in the slot. Hickman took a wrist shot that Groenheyde stopped but puck lay to his right in the crease. Lund banged at the rebound of Hickman’s shot and got the puck over Groenheyde’s glove for the go-ahead goal.
Gallimore scored an empty-net power-play goal to get the T-Birds fourth goal. Verdino got the puck in the right circle of the T-Bird zone to Marcel Noebels just inside the blue line. Noebels passed the puck to Gallimore in the neutral zone. Gallimore took the puck into Bronco zone and snapped home a wrist shot for his 13th goal of the season.
The Broncos finished with a 44-34 lead in shots on goal.
Seattle goalie Calvin Pickard made 42 saves on 44 shots to improve his record to 11-9-0-1.
Groenheyde stopped 30 of 33 shots and his record falls to 9-9-1-2.
The T-Birds next game is Friday against the Tri-City Americans at 7:35 p.m. at the ShoWare Center.
