Seattle Thunderbirds goalie Calvin Pickard made 32 saves and Seth Swenson and Colin Jacobs scored power-play goals to lead the T-Birds to a 2-0 shutout victory over the Kelowna Rockets Wednesday at Prospera Place in Kelowna, British Columbia.
Pickard made 12 saves in the first period, 11 in the second period and nine in the third period to get his fourth shutout of the season. Pickard’s record is now 19-27-1-1 with the win.
The T-Birds moved into a tie for seventh place in the Western Conference playoff standings with the Victoria Royals. The T-Birds have a 19-32-1-1 record which is good for 40 points. The Royals are 17-32-2-4 and also have 40 points.
The T-Birds took a 1-0 lead 33 seconds into the third period on a power-play goal by Seth Swenson. Connor Honey got the puck to Shea Theodore at the left point. Theodore put a hard shot on goal with Swenson in front of Kelowna goalie Jordon Cooke. Swenson tipped Theodore’s shot past Cooke for the goal. The goal was Swenson’s fifth with the T-Birds since joining the team at the trade deadline from the Portland Winterhawks.
Seattle struck on the power play for a second time at 8:55 of the third. Theodore had the puck at the right point. He found Burke Gallimore in the left circle. Gallimore held the puck and then hit Colin Jacobs coming off the bench with a pass in the right circle. Jacobs skated in and put a snap shot over Cooke’s glove for his sixth goal of the year.
Kelowna (24-24-2-4) outshot Seattle 32-30 in the game.
Cooke stopped 28 of 30 shots and his record is now 6-6-2-2.
The T-Birds head to Spokane to face the Chiefs on Friday at 7:05pm at Veterans Memorial Arena. They are back home on Saturday to take on the Portland Winterhawks at ShoWare Center at 7:05pm.
