A Seattle Thunderbirds rally from a three-goal deficit Friday night against the Kamloops Blazers at ShoWare Center fell one goal short.
The T-Birds were down 4-1 entering the third period but Chance Lund scored at 2:27 and Seth Swenson scored at 17:07 to get the T-Birds within one.
Seattle pulled goalie Daniel Cotton in the final minute and a half for an extra attacker and had several solid scoring chances before Kamloops sealed a 5-3 win with an empty-net goal.
Kamloops (33-10-1-2) took a 1-0 lead at 2:30 of the first period on a goal from Chase Souto. Bronson Maschmeyer and Dylan Willick had the assists.
The Blazers extended their lead to 2-0 at 9:30 of the first when Colin Smith scored from a sharp angle. Tim Bozon assisted on the goal that was scored from the left goal line.
Seattle (17-25-0-1) got on the board at 17:59 of the first. Brad Deagle sent the puck low to Colin Jacobs behind the Seattle goal. Jacobs centered the puck to Lund in the slot. Kamloops goalie Cam Lanigan came out of the crease to challenge Lund. Lund ripped a wrist shot over Lanigan’s glove for his 10th goal of the year.
Kamloops outshot Seattle 16-9 in the first period.
Chase Schaber scored at 13:46 of the second to give the Blazers a 3-1 lead. Cole Ully and Brandon Ranford had the assists.
Maschmeyer scored a power-play goal at 16:28 of the second. JC Lipon and Smith were credited with the assists.
The Blazers outshot the T-Birds 13-9 in the second period and led 29-18 in total shots after two periods.
Lund cut the Blazers lead to two goals when he tipped a Cason Machacek point shot at 2:37 of the third period past Lanigan. Tyler Alos got the puck to Machacek just inside the blue line at center ice. Machacek put a hard slap shot in goal with Lund in front of the Kamloops goalie.
Swenson got the T-Birds to within one when he scored at 17:07 of the third. Luke Lockhart took a shot on goal that rebounded into the slot to Swenson. Swenson reached for the puck and pushed a shot towards Lanigan. The puck snuck by the goalie at the left post for Swenson’s fourth goal of the year.
Schaber scored an unassisted empty-net goal at 19:54 of the third to seal the win for the Blazers.
Kamloops outshot Seattle 40-33 in the game.
Cotton stopped 35 of 39 shots of and his record is now 0-5-0-0.
Lanigan stopped 30 of 33 shots and his record is now 8-4-0-0.
The T-Birds face the Everett Silvertips on Saturday at Comcast Arena at 7:05pm. They then travel to Vancouver to take on the Giants at Pacific Coliseum on Sunday at 5:05pm.
