Kent Reporter’s Thunderbird of the week is goalie Calvin Pickard. He has been with the Thunderbirds his whole career. Last season he played 68 games, 27 wins and 33 losses with 2443 saves. Pickard this season has played in 18 games and already has 573 saves.
Highlights
2010-11: Calvin Pickard returned from the Training Camp of the Colorado Avalanche on September 21, 2010, just before the T-Birds season started. He appeared in a team high 68 games, tying with him Danny Lorenz for most games played in a season. He finished the season with a 27-33-3-5 record and one shutout. Pickard made 23 saves against the Kelowna Rockets at Prospera Place on March 16 to get the shutout. He stopped nine shots in the first and third periods and five shots in the second period. Pickard had a .916 save percentage and a 3.36 goals against average this season. Pickard had a season high 57 saves against the Spokane Chiefs on February 13 at ShoWare Center in a 3-1 win. He attended Hockey Canada’s Goalie Development Camp and the Avalanche’s Development Camps, which were both held in June.
2009-10: In August of 2009 Calvin started his hockey season by playing in the 2009 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka Tournament in the Czech Republic and Slovakia with Team Canada. He helped Team Canada win a gold medal in the U-18 tournament. In his second season with the Thunderbirds Calvin played 3,688 minutes in 62 games finishing with a 16-34-7-5 record, including three shutouts. He had two games during the season, both against Tri-Cities, in which he made 50 or more saves. The first took place October 2, 2009, when he made 57 saves in a 1-0 shutout . The second was December 11, 2009, when he made 54 saves. Pickard ended the season with 3.09 goals against average and .907 save percentage. In the 2010 NHL draft Pickard was selected in the second round and 49th overall by The Colorado
Avalanche.
2008-09: In Calvin’s rookie season in goal for Thunderbirds, he played a total of 2,694 minutes in 47 games. He finished with a record of 23-16-1-4 and three shutouts. He had a personal best 36 saves on December 13, 2008 vs. Spokane, and once again vs. Kelowna on January 31 2009. Calvin ended the regular season with a goals against average of 3.05 and a save percentage of .896. During the playoffs Calvin played in all five games, posting a 1-4 record with a .915 save percentage and 3.03 goals against average.
