Kent-Meridian High’s Emmanuel Daigbe picked up Alex Berfanger and slammed him twice to take a Class 4A regional title.

It was the second time in almost a year that Daigbe had faced off against the Union High School senior, and he was out for revenge after coming close to a state victory at the 25th Mat Classic.

Other title winners included Kent-Meridian’s Jahleel Smith, who beat Ryden Fu in a 12-9 decision, while Kentridge’s Derek Freitag won a 10-5 decision over Mountain View’s Will Taiosacan.

They each advance to the Mat Classic state championships Feb. 20-21 at the Tacoma Dome.

Josh Beckler from Kentlake won the 160-pound 4A regional title with a 17-1 decision over Michael Snediki. Kentlake’s Zach Harris took third at 195 and also will compete at state.

Despite not having an individual champion, Kentwood wrestlers took fourth at regionals with 109 points.

Sophomore Andy Sandu, 113, finished second. Senior Walker Meyers came in fourth place at 132. In the 160-pound weight class, senior Haroldo Parada finished third.

Kentwood junior Trenton Harris took second at 195. Senior Kyle Capperlaud finished in second place in the 220 division. Kentwood junior Austin Duncan came in second at 285.

The Kentwood girls team will send four wrestlers to the Mat Classic.

At 100 pounds, Sidney Suit took fourth at the regional tournament in Yelm on Saturday. Sara Mozeleski was third at 135. Anna Watson came in fifth at 140 and Sabrina Perez took fifth at 170.

Gymnastics

Kent Meridian’s Caila Tongco took second place on her floor routine and seventh on vaulting in district competition. She will compete at state Feb. 20-21 at the Tacoma Dome.
