Q: What is your favorite subject in school?
A: Math.
Q: What other activities do you participate in?
A: Hiking.
Q: Person who has helped you succeed the most?
A: Mom – always supportive of everything I do and pushes me to be my best.
Q: Do you have a pre- or post-game tradition? What is it?
A: No.
Q: Song you currently can’t get enough of?
A: “East Side” by Khalib.

Kentwood High School’s Chase Canning, swim, was selected as the Kent Reporter’s Male Athlete of the Week for Feb. 15.
Q: What is your favorite subject in school?
A: Freshman seminar (social and emotional learning)
Q: What other activities do you participate in?
A: Out of school and club swimming, I participate in church activities and photography.
Q: Person who has helped you succeed the most?
A: My mom. She is constantly driving me around, offering emotional support and making me food.
Q: Do you have a pre- or post-game tradition? What is it?
A: I always carb load on Chipotle.
Q: Song you currently can’t get enough of?
A: “Bambi” by Hippo Campus.
From the Sideline
“Chase only started swimming when he was 12 years old. Chase swims year round to improve and get faster. Although being one of the better swimmers on the team, Chase’s work ethic never lags and is one of the most coachable athletes I have ever had. He makes a point of being the example, in and out of the water.
“Chase dropped five seconds over the season in the 100 butterfly, broke the school record and qualified for state. He dropped eight seconds this season in the 200 freestyle and qualified for state.
“Chase continues to do things without being asked and is always doing more than is expected of him. At one point in the season, Chase saw an opposing coach setting up the pool for an away meet by himself – a few minutes later, I saw Chase helping this coach set up their pool for the meet. Chase Canning is an outstanding athlete by far, but he is an even better person and sets the example for every athlete I coach.”
