The Red Deer Rebels defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 8-2 Friday night at the Enmax Centrium in Red Deer, Alberta.
This was the T-Birds first game of a six game road trip through the Central Division. They face the Edmonton Oil Kings Saturday at Rexall Place at 6pm.
Seattle (5-8-0-0) and Red Deer traded goals 17 seconds apart in the middle of the first period to open the scoring. Burke Gallimore got the T-Birds on the board at 9:58 on an assist from Brendan Rouse. The Rebels responded when defenseman Matt Dumba scored at 10:15 of the period. Turner Elson and Aaron Borejko had the assists on Dumba’s goal.
The Rebels then scored three more times in the first period to take a 4-1 lead to the first intermission. Mason Burr scored at 14:53 and then Cory Millette and John Persson tallied 35 seconds apart. Millette’s goal was at 18:01 and Persson’s came at 18:36.
Red Deer (10-4-0-1) outshot Seattle 20-4 in the first period.
The Rebels went in front 5-1 at 3:46 of the second period when Adam Kambeitz scored. Persson had the only assist on the goal.
Seattle replaced goalie Calvin Pickard with Daniel Cotton after the fifth Red Deer goal. Pickard made 17 saves on 22 shots and had his record fall to 5-7-0-0 with the loss.
Kambeitz scored a power-play goal at 8:03 of the second to give the Rebels a 6-1 lead. Elson scored at 16:24 of the second to get Red Deer’s seventh goal.
Chance Lund scored the T-Birds second goal of the game at 19:30 of the second. Lund curled off the left boards, skated into the high slot, and snapped a shot past Red Deer goalie Patrik Bartosak high on the glove side with traffic in front of the net. Branden Troock and Marcel Noebels had the assists on Lund’s fourth goal of the year.
The T-Birds outshot the Rebels 12-11 in the second period but the Rebels led 31-16 after two periods.
Elson scored an unassisted power-play goal at 17:02 of the third period to get the Rebels eighth goal of the game.
Red Deer outshot Seattle 16-4 in the third period and 47-20 in the game.
Bartosak stopped 18 of 20 shots and his record is now 10-3-0-1.
Cotton made 22 saves on 25 shots in just over 36 minutes of action.
The T-Birds return to ShoWare Center on Friday, November 18, when they will play the Tri-City Americans at 7:35pm
T-Birds single game tickets for the 2011-12 season are available online at the T-Birds website and at the ShoWare Center box office. The ShoWare Center Box Office is open Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday game days at 10 a.m. and Sunday game days at noon.
