The Seattle Thunderbirds junior hockey team collected more than 5,000 teddy bears thrown by fans at the annual Teddy Bear Toss Night.
A season-high crowd of 5,054 attended the Western Hockey League game Saturday, Dec. 3 at accesso ShoWare Center in Kent. The bears were tossed after the T-Birds scored their first goal en route to a 3-0 win over the Victoria Royals. The bears will be donated to Salvation Army to distribute to children.
Jared Davidson scored in the first period to send the bears flying from the crowd.
“It was pretty cool.” he said. “It was pretty easy with the guys screening in front of the net. To see all the teddy bears come out and to see the fans support us like that, it was awesome, especially in my last year here, it was pretty special.”
The victory kept Seattle (17-4-1-0, 35 points) in second place in the Western Conference, just four points behind the Portland Winterhawks going into this week’s games.
Seattle’s next home game is against the Vancouver Giants at 5:05 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11. The T-Birds also are home at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13 against the Prince George Cougars and at 7:05 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16 against the Everett Silvertips.
