A handful of local swimmers earned spots with their performance this past weekend at the West Central District Championship meet at Rogers High.
In the team race, Kentridge finished ninth and Kentlake finished 10th, while Gig Harbor ran away with the district title with 211.5 points.
Tanner Keeling-Garcia and Erik Fulmer from Kentlake placed individually while the Falcons 400 yard relay team of Keeling-Garcia, Fulmer, David Dougherty and Kyle Koon, earned a spot at state by posting a time of 3:28.57 in the consolation final, bumping out Decatur, which had finished sixth in the championship final with a time of 3:31.17.
Wednesday at the ShoWare Center in Kent, two unlikely paths crossed in the most entertaining of ways.
Kent-Meridian’s Nora Keith was banged up on Saturday during the Class 4A sub-district meet at Kentwood High.
Kentlake’s Lynnsey Thielman wasn’t banged up, but was suffering from a bad cough.

The Portland Winterhawks defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 6-3 Friday night at the Rose Garden in Portland.
The Kelowna Rockets defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 2-1 in overtime Jan. 31 at the ShoWare Center.
The Seattle Thunderbirds clawed back from an early 2-0 deficit to tie the game midway through the second period, but eventually fell to the Portland Winterhawks 6-2 on Saturday evening in Portland.
The Spokane Chiefs defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 4-2 Friday night at the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena.
Plenty of the expected was joined by one big surprise Saturday at Kent-Meridian High during the South Puget Sound League North Division sub-district wrestling tournament.
With an ear-to-ear grin, Kentwood’s Alec Wilson happily gave out his autograph to a youngster Friday night at Kentlake High.
He was a self-proclaimed chunky kid.
And as a 5-foot-4, 182-pound sophomore last winter, Jose Hernandez appeared displaced on the high school wrestling mat, where he typically got wiped clean by taller, stronger and more conditioned upperclassmen.
