TRACK: Kent-Meridian’s Melanie Vertrees getting back on track at University of Oregon

Her body needed a break, but her mind wouldn’t listen. Mind over matter? For years, it had worked out exactly that way for former Kent-Meridian High multi-sport star Melanie Vertrees. From gymnastics to swimming, volleyball to basketball, cross country to track, Vertrees did it all growing up, and while attending the East Hill school.

FOOTBALL: Kent-Meridian stops TJ, braces for Tahoma

The ball hasn’t bounced the way of the Kent-Meridian High football team for the last several years. On Saturday, Oct. 2, however, the Royals finally had one go their way. Defensive end Luke Barzie made the fourth-quarter strip of a Thomas Jefferson running back, and Brandon Harris swooped in for the recovery, helping the Royals secure a 38-34 victory over Thomas Jefferson in a South Puget Sound League North Division game.

GIRLS SOCCER: Kentridge finding its groove

Things are finally coming together for the Kentridge High girls soccer team. After a slow start to the season, the Chargers got on track last week thanks to a huge offensive performance by Katie Clayton. Clayton scored one goal, and assisted on four others on Sept. 23, lifting the Chargers past Mount Rainier 6-2 in a South Puget Sound League North Division game.
