Thunderbirds lose on the road to Portland in front of crowd of 10,000

The Portland Winterhawks defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 2-1 Jan. 8 in front of 10,288 at the Rose Garden in Portland. The T-Birds were down 2-0 late in the third period when Travis Toomey scored a power-play goal to cut the Winterhawks lead to one goal.

The Seattle Thunderbirds defeated the Kelowna Rockets 3-1 Jan. 7 at the ShoWare Center behind goals by Travis Toomey, Burke Gallimore, and Marcel Noebels, as well as a stellar performance from goalie Calvin Pickard. Adding to the excitement was a large number of Kent-Meridian High School students and staff, cheering the T-Birds on as part of Kent-Meridian Night at the T-Birds game.

WRESTLING: Kent schools medal 22 at All-SPSL Championships

After years of discussion, the All-South Puget Sound League Championships wrestling tournament reached fruition Dec. 30 at Auburn High. And, as anticipated, the competition and talent level on the mat were as high as ever. Behind a pair of individual championships and 10 total placers, Enumclaw snuck away with the team title, pulling in a total of 198.5 points. The Hornets were followed by second-place Auburn (187.5), Graham-Kapowsin (184) and Tahoma (167).

BOYS BASKETBALL: Kent-Meridian stuns third-ranked Kentwood 47-42

The Kent-Meridian High boys basketball team has taken plenty of punches to the gut the last several years in the South Puget Sound League North Division. Tuesday night, the Royals punched back. D’Juan Miller scored a team-high 11 points, including seven in the pivotal fourth quarter, and Tyree Bagley added 10 more, leading the Royals to a 47-42 upset of third-ranked Kentwood at Green River Community College.

Kent-Meridian's DECA and video-production students will be "taking over" the T-Birds' hockey game to raise money for K-M, as well as to promote the school in the community.

Chiefs hand Thunderbirds defeat on Spokane home ice Dec. 29

The Spokane Chiefs defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 8-2 Dec. 29 at Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena in Spokane. The first shot of the game put Seattle (15-13-3-4) in front 1-0. Travis Toomey beat Spokane goalie James Reid over the glove at 2:19 to give the T-Birds the lead. Erik Bonsor and Burke Gallimore had assists on Toomey's sixth goal of the year.

Thielman was one of just five gymnasts from the Kent School District to qualify for the Class 4A state meet last season. T-Birds vanquish Spokane in overtime Dec. 15

Seattle Thunderbirds right wing Burke Gallimore had a hat trick Dec. 15 at the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena to help lead the T-Birds to a 5-4 overtime victory over the Spokane Chiefs. Seattle goalie Calvin Pickard returned from the Canadian National Junior Team Selection Camp in Toronto on Wednesday afternoon. Pickard made 40 saves on 44 shots and improved his record to 14-9-2-4.
