JASON BOYCE, Kentwood

Accomplishment: Boyce, Kentwood’s leading scorer, delivered again last Friday, depositing 20 points to lead the Conquerors over Tahoma 77-60.
Favorite class: English. If you could invite anyone in the world to dinner, whom would you invite, and what would you serve: My brother Aaron, Martin Luther King Jr., (teammate) Alec Wilson and I’d serve my mom’s garlic chicken pizza.
Greatest athletic moment: Winning the state basketball title (last year) and the 2010 football season.

JOSH SMITH, Kent-Meridian
Grade: Sophomore.
Sport: Wrestling.
Accomplishment: Smith pulled the biggest upset of the sub-district tournament, entering the day as the No. 4 seed and leaving with the title after working over Mount Rainier’s A.J. Antoigue 23-13.
Favorite class: Math.
If you could invite anyone in the world to dinner, whom would you invite, and what would you serve: I would invite John Wooden because I like to know what made him the best (college basketball) coach. I would serve steak, lobster, mashed potatoes, vegetables and sparkling apple cider.

KAYLIN MOSLEY, Kentridge

Accomplishment: Mosley finished the season on a high note, scoring a season-high 9 points against Mount Rainier.
If you could invite anyone in the world to dinner, whom would you invite, and what would you serve: Definitely University of Washington pitcher Danielle Lawrie, and I would serve spaghetti and garlic bread.
Favorite class: Sports medicine.
Greatest athletic moment: Making varsity fastpitch as a freshman, making varsity basketball this year.

SARAH TOEAINA, Kentwood
Grade: Freshman.
Sport: Basketball.
Accomplishment: Toeaina scored a team-high 13 points, lifting the Conquerors over Tahoma 42-37.
The Kentridge High boys basketball team ran out of gas Friday afternoon at the ShoWare Center.
Despite 25 points from star Gary Bell and 14 more from Brendan Westendorf, the Chargers blew a 13-point third-quarter lead in falling to Puyallup 61-60 in a South Puget Sound League seeding game.
Puyallup didn't take its first lead until 1-minute, 10 seconds remained in the fourth quarter, when guard Jay Balmer split the defense for an uncontested layup, giving the Vikings a 59-57 advantage. Kentridge (15-7) went up seconds later on a 3-pointer by Denzel Daniels, but it was to no avail.
The postseason tends to bring out the best in Kentwood High's Liz Mills.
Last year as a junior, Mills averaged 17 points per game in the playoffs, nearly five points above her season average.
Now a senior, Mills was at it again Friday night at the ShoWare Center in Kentwood's first playoff game of the season. The 5-foot-11 forward scored 19 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds, leading the Conquerors past Emerald Ridge 65-59 in a showdown for the South Puget Sound League's No. 3 seed to the West Central District tournament.
For the second week in a row, the Kentridge High boys swim team held steady.
Standouts Cameron Whiting and Chase Bublitz continued to do their thing, leading the Chargers to a second-place finish at the West Central District meet at Rogers High in Puyallup. Beamer swam away with the meet, racking up 193 points, followed well in the distance by the Chargers at 152 and third-place Central Kitsap and Gig Harbor, which tied at 140.
David Jones and Jason Boyce were looking for the perfect fit.
Last week on the Feb. 2 National Signing Day for student-athletes, both Kent-Meridian’s Jones and Kentwood’s Boyce found just that. Jones, a quarterback, chose Portland State University while Boyce, a wide receiver, selected Eastern Washington University.
“They want me to play as soon as possible, which means I have to get to business and be ready when I go down there,” said Jones, finished the regular season with 2,455 total yards to go along with 22 rushing touchdowns and nine passing scores. “This was just the best fit for what I can do.”
Jordan Johnson is well aware that she could be tumbling on the postseason gymnastics mat for the final time this season.
That’s why the Kentwood senior is making the most of these final few weeks.
Johnson certainly made the most of her time on the mat during Saturday’s sub-district meet at Mount Rainier High in Des Moines, leading all locals with a sixth-place finish in the all-around with a final tally of 35.225.
The eighth-ranked Auburn Riverside High girls basketball team was looking for payback and a championship Tuesday night at Kentwood.
The Ravens found both.
Behind another strong performance by star Kat Cooper, the Ravens held off the Conquerors 61-57 to snap a two-way tie for first place and secure the South Puget Sound League North Division crown on the final day of the regular season.
Tahoma remained on top and Kentridge broke through during Friday and Saturday’s sub-district wrestling tournament at Auburn High.
Tahoma, which won the South Puget Sound League North Division, walked away with the team title, racking up an eyepopping 394 points, well ahead of second-place Auburn at 266. The gap between first and second was the widest since 2008, and the second biggest of the last 10 years. In the process, the Bears advanced 15 wrestlers to the Region III tournament, and crowned five champions.

The Kentridge High boys swim team's one-two punch was in full effect Saturday during the South Puget Sound League meet at Rogers High in Puyallup.
Senior Cameron Whiting and freshman phenom Chase Bublitz continued to dazzle, securing three individual first-place finishes as the Chargers brought home second place with 223 points. Beamer won the meet with 235 points while Mount Rainier finished a distant third behind Kentridge with 199 points.
The Kentlake High gymnastics team is finally getting healthy.
And last week at the All-City meet, that good health showed for the Falcons.
Behind the usual standout performances by Katie Steckler and Lynnsey Thielman along with the emergence of sophomore Melissa Alberts, the Falcons cruised to a season-high 164.25 points en route to putting away Kentridge, Kentwood and Kent-Meridian in a four-team meet at Kentwood High Wednesday, Jan. 26.
The Seattle Thunderbirds fell to the Everett Silvertips 2-1 on Sunday evening at the ShoWare Center.
Everett (21-23-3-4) opened the scoring on the power-play at 11:50 of the first period on Ryan Murray's third goal of the season. Ryan Harrison and Brennan Yadlowski assisted on the goal.
The first period ended with the Silvertips maintaining their 1-0 lead. Shots were even 9-9 through 20 minutes of play.
The Everett Silvertips defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 7-0 Jan. 28 at the Comcast Arena in Everett.
Everett took a 1-0 lead at 10:24 of the first period on a goal by Tyler Maxwell. Parker Stanfield and Ryan Murray had the assists.
The Silvertips went in front 2-0 at 12:10 of the first on a power-play goal from Clayton Cumiskey. Scott MacDonald had the only assist on the goal.
He has played second fiddle to his star teammate all season long.
Friday night under the ShoWare Center spotlight, Kentridge High’s Brendan Westendorf took center stage.
Westendorf, a mild mannered 6-foot-4 senior forward, went off for a game-high 23 points, leading the fourth-ranked Kentridge High boys basketball team past No. 5 Kentwood 61-54 in the featured game of the Les Schwab Kent Shootout at the ShoWare Center.
This was one the Kentlake High girls basketball team desperately needed.
It also was one the Falcons almost gave away at the end.
Jessica Barnes poured in 13 points and Alyssa Simonson added 11 as Kentlake held off Kent-Meridian 47-45 at the ShoWare Center in the Les Schwab Kent Shootout.
The Kentlake High boys basketball team needed a big-time performance Friday night at the ShoWare Center to stay in the playoff hunt.
Senior forward Sean Hartnett provided exactly that, scoring a season-high 24 points to lift the Falcons past Kent-Meridian 56-53 in the Les Scwhab Kent Shootout. The Falcons (5-7 in league, 8-8 overall) were in dire need of a performance exactly like the one Harnett served up as they remain on the outside looking in on the playoff race.
Momentum is on the side of the Kentwood High girls basketball team.
Behind their usual three-pronged attack of Kylie Huerta, Liz Mills and Courtney Johnson, the Conquerors dispatched Kentridge 66-22 Friday night at the ShoWare Center in the Les Schwab Kent Shootout.
Mills delivered a team-high 16 points, Huerta added 15 and Johnson powered her way to 13.
The names and faces have changed through the years for the Kentwood High cheer team.
The success, however, has remained largely the same.
