Trailing Arlington 10-4 midway through the first quarter of a Class 4A state basketball opener for both teams – and just moments after being knocked hard to the floor but not getting the call – Kentridge’s star point guard turned up the heat on the Eagles.
Bell proceeded to rip off six straight points, tying the game 10-10 and giving Arlington a taste of what was about to come.

This time last year, Kentwood diver Jesse Dehnert wasn't even competing at the Class 4A state boys swim and dive championships.
What a difference a year makes.
At the end of Saturday, Dehnert was wearing a seventh-place medal having tallied 314 points.
The Kentwood High boys basketball team opened with a bang, but finished with a fizzle Monday night at the ShoWare Center.
Behind 22 points from star guard DaVonte Lacy, fourth-ranked Curtis denied Kentwood 59-43 in the championship game of the West Central/Southwest Bi-District tournament.
Kentwood made an immediate statement on the game's opening play, when Jason Boyce connected with Taylor Jones on a long alley-oop that gave the Conquerors the instant momentum and a 2-0 lead. In a game that included nine lead changes and one tie in the first half, the Vikings ran away with things in the third quarter to secure the title.
"We wanted to let them know that we were there," Kentwood coach Brian Davis said of the opening play. "We just didn't let them know long enough."
The end of an era took place at the Tacoma Dome’s Exhibition Hall Saturday afternoon during the Class 4A state gymnastics meet.
Kentlake senior Lynnsey Thielman put the final touches on what has been a magnificent prep career while coach Marla Boyd, who has guided the Falcons through the last five seasons, enjoyed her final state meet.
The Seattle Thunderbirds came back from a two-goal deficit in the third period to beat the Chilliwack Bruins 4-3 in a shootout Feb. 20 at the ShoWare Center.
Ryan Howse was the first shooter in the shootout. He came down on Seattle goalie Calvin Pickard and beat the net minder with a quick move to the right. Burke Gallimore was Seattle's first shooter and he beat Chilliwack goalie Lucas Gore five-hole.
Kevin Sunder was the second Bruins shooter. Pickard stopped him with a quick poke check. Colin Jacobs was the T-Birds second shooter. Jacobs, a right hand shot, came down on Gore, faked left, forcing Gore down and then he brought the puck back right and slide it into an empty net.

Mixed feelings took center stage Saturday night at the Tacoma Dome during Mat Classic XXIII.
For 171-pound Kentlake senior Jesse Keliiliki, those feelings revolved around being an "underdog." For Kent-Meridian heavyweight Jean-Claude Atkinson, the feelings were more about exceeding most everyone's expectations, yet still falling short of the goals he established for himself at the beginning of the season. And for 119-pound Kentridge senior Nick Aliment, Saturday proved to be a day when he finished his prep wrestling career on a high note by winning his final match.
Ruben Navejas hit one out of the park Saturday night at the Tacoma Dome.
One of the finest wrestlers to ever come out of Kentwood High, Navejas outmaneuvered and outmuscled Matthew Nguyen 8-3 in the 112-pound championship match of Mat Classic XXIII to bring home his second title in the last three years.
Third time proved to be a charm for the Kentwood High boys basketball team Wednesday night at Kentridge.
Behind a balanced scoring attack that included five players in double-figures, the Conquerors turned back the Chargers 75-62 in a West Central/Southwest Bi-District game at Kentridge High.
It was the first time in three tries this season that Kentwood (15-7) has beaten Kentridge (15-8).

Colton Marlowe broke his finger in December. The injury, however, didn’t break Marlowe’s wrestling season.
Instead, Kentlake’s 130-pound standout junior pushed on — wrapping up the broken digit with athletic tape for competition — with a single goal in mind. That goal wasn’t only a state-tournament berth, but a high placing at this weekend’s Mat Classic XXIII at the Tacoma Dome.
Marlowe took one more step closer toward achieving his goal last weekend, winning the 130-pound title at the Class 4A Region III tournament at Shelton High.
Jesse Dehnert had a pretty good idea he was going to crack the Kentwood High record book. He had examined the swim team’s diving standards and figured it was just a matter of time until his name appeared.
As it turned out, the Kentwood junior could not have picked a better — or more celebratory — moment.
On Jan. 8 – Dehnert’s 17 birthday – the Conqueror not only uncorked a school record-setting performance, he also earned a state berth. And he polished off both pursuits with one crisp, clean dive during the Lakes Invitational in Lakewood.
The Kentwood High girls basketball team moved one step closer Tuesday night to clinching their sixth straight state berth.
Senior Liz Mills delivered big for a second straight game, scoring a team-high 15 points in leading the Conquerors past Evergreen 58-53 in a first-round West Central District matchup at Kentwood High.
The future is bright on the Kentridge High gymnastics mats.
That future appears to be coming earlier than expected, too.
Kentridge freshmen Ellie Hoekman and Amy Hiraki both starred in last week's district meet, held Feb. 11 at Mount Rainier High in Des Moines. Hoekman posted a 9.225 on her floor routine and Hiraki added a 7.25 on the uneven bars as both qualified for the state meet, which will be held Friday and Saturday, Feb. 18-19 at the Tacoma Dome Exhibition Hall.
