The Kentwood High baseball program didn't have to look far in finding a new coach to replace Jon Aarstad, who stepped down in July.
Mark Zender, who teaches marketing and the DECA program at the school, was named last week as Aarstad's replacement. Zender spent the last two years as the school's freshmen team baseball coach and assisted alongside Aarstad. However, Zender's experience runs much deeper than the last two years. Zender was the head baseball coach at O'Dea High School from 1987-1997, when he guided the Fighting Irish to three state berths in 11 years. The high point for O'Dea under Zender came in 1987, when the Fighting Irish took third at the state tournament.
Marquetching was never headed Saturday and rolled to a 1-½ length triumph over Goldledue in the Best Western Peppertree Purse for 3-year-olds at Emerald Downs.

Kentlake High's three-sport standout has often been tabbed the last two years by football coach Chris Paulson as "the best athlete walking the school halls." In addition, Pernell is equally liked by his classmates and teammates due to his quiet, humble personality.
Pernell showed what all the excitement was about Thursday night at French Field. The mild-mannered senior intercepted two passes, chipped in a fumble recovery, ran for one touchdown and caught another, leading Kentlake past Auburn Riverside 49-7 in the South Puget Sound League North Division season opener for both teams.
The Kentlake Falcons will be taking on the Auburn Riverside Falcons in the first South Puget Sound League 4A North football game of the season.

And if all goes as planned, it’s going to spark the Chargers into contention for the South Puget Sound League North Division title. Possibly even net the Chargers their first league crown since 2002, when they rolled to an unbeaten 8-0 regular-season record.
Instead of that change taking place on the field, however, it’s happening on the sideline, where longtime coach Marty Osborn is handing over his offensive coordinating duties to assistant Jeff Shumake.
It’s all about putting points on the board, Osborn noted.
Numbers don’t lie.

Despite having both on its side, the Kentwood High football team enters the season in a rather unusual predicament this fall. The Conquerors, contrary to their tradition and three-plus decades of success both in the regular season and the playoffs, are flying under the radar.
And it suits ’em just fine.

Chu and I simply refused to yield the lead Saturday at Emerald Downs.
The diminutive You and I gelding held on gamely for a head victory over Havanna Red in the 30th running of the $40,000 WTBOA Lads Stakes for 2-year-old colts and geldings. Perfectly ridden by Juan Gutierrez, Chu and I ran one mile in 1:38.43 on a fast track and paid $6, $3.40 and $2.80.
