For the Reporter

Memphis Mobster and leading rider Leslie Mawing powered to a 3¾-length victory Saturday in the featured Quality Inn Pacific Purse for 3-year-olds and up at Emerald Downs.

Trained by Doris Harwood for owners Michael Pollowitz and Jeff Wilson, Memphis Mobster ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:42.09 on a fast track and paid $3.60 and $2.40.

Surprise Sale, with Eliska Kubinova riding, finished second and paid $3.20, while Free Beer and Won Won Oh Five completed the order of finish. Doctor Bruce S. was a late scratch at the starting gate.

Memphis Mobster dictated the pace from start to finish, setting fractions of :24.42, :47.70, 1:11.55 and 1:35.46, en route to his first victory in six starts at the meeting. A 7-year-old California-bred gelding by Memo, Memphis Mobster is 12-6-3 in 43 lifetime starts with earnings of $90,562

For Mawing, it was his second win Saturday and extended his lead to 49-40 over Rocco Bowen in the jockeys’ standings. The 40-year-old rider already has 12 multiple win days this season.

Harwood, meanwhile, has 10 wins at the meet and needs four wins to become only the fifth trainer to win 500 races at Emerald Downs. She also ranks No. 1 with 63 stakes wins.
