Rui Li, who’ll be a junior at Kentwood High in the fall, shot a 5-over-par 76 on Wednesday, giving her a share of the lead in the girls 16-17 age division at the Washington Junior Golf Association tournament in Spokane.

Li played her first round on the par-71 layout at Manito Country Club, one of the three courses in the Spokane area being used for the tournament. She ended the first day deadlocked with Rachel Choi of Mukilteo and Simone Strauss of Kirkland, four shots up on the field.

Kent’s Catherina Li, while not quite in the lead, wasn’t far off it in the girls 12-13 division. She fired a 75 at Wandermere, leaving her in second, two shots behind leader Sierra Bezdicek of Colbert.

In the boys 16-17 division at Manito, Sean McMullen of Kent shot a 4-over 75 in the first round, putting him six shots behind co-leaders James Van Alstine of Lakewood and Hank Frame of Spokane Valley. In that same age division, Tyler Clavin of Kent was at 79.

Kent’s Tom Zavada, winner of the district championship in the 14-15 boys age division, had a rough first day at state, shooting an 87 on the par-72 Spokane Country Club course. Charlie Kern of Mercer Island set the pace with a 68.
