The Kootenay Ice defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 6-2 Nov. 27 at the ShoWare Center.
The Ice were led by a two-goal effort from Steele Boomer, and a solid showing by Ice netminder Nathan Lieuwen who made 23 saves on 25 shots.
Luke Lockhart picked up the game’s first goal on a wrist shot at 8:44 of the first period. Kootenay was unable to clear on the penalty kill and Brenden Dillon fed Lockhart for his 11th of the season to give the T-Birds the 1-0 lead.
After a scramble around Seattle’s net, Kootenay evened the game at 1-1 on a power-play goal by Steele Boomer. Kevin King and Matt Fraser assisted on the goal at 13:07 of the first.
Later in the period, the Ice scored two more power-play goals in just more than a minute. At 17:33, Boomer netted his second goal of the game, assisted by Jagger Dirk and Fraser to give the Ice the 2-1 advantage.
At 18:43, King extended the Kootenay lead to 3-1 in what proved to be the game-winning goal. Brayden McNabb had the only assist.
After one period of play the Ice led the T-Birds in shots 17 to 5.
The Ice extended their lead to 4-1 at 1:35 of the second period when Drew Czerwonka deflected a James Martin shot from the blue line past goalie Calvin Pickard. Joe Antilla also picked up an assist on the goal.
Jesse Ismond put the Ice up 5-1 at 5:03 of the second period. King assisted on the goal.
After the fifth Ice goal Michael Salmon replaced Pickard in net. Pickard made 18 saves on 23 shots and his record falls to 11-6-2-4.
The Ice scored again before then end of the second on a goal from Sam Reinhart at 18:38. Antilla had the only assist on the goal.
Kootenay (17-7-0-2) outshot Seattle 12-8 in the second period and led 29-13 in total shots after two periods.
Travis Bobbee scored the Thunderbirds (11-6-3-4) second goal of the night at 9:48 of the third period. Charles Wells and Erik Bonsor assisted Bobbee on the goal that cut Kootenay’s lead to 6-2.
The T-Birds outshot the Ice 12 to 9 in the third period but Kootenay held a 38-25 advantage in shots for the game.
Salmon stopped 14 of 15 shots in 34 minutes of action.
The T-Birds next game is Tuesday, November 30, against the Medicine Hat Tigers at ShoWare Center at 7:05 p.m.
