The Pittsburgh Pirates took recent Kentwood High grad Reese McGuire with the 14th overall pick in the June draft.

McGuire signed for $2.36 million with the Pirates and joined their rookie-level minor league team in the Gulf Coast League in Flordia.

Here’s what CBSSports.com posted about McGuire on its website Wednesday:

“Pirates catcher prospect Reese McGuire tallied four hits, three RBI and two doubles in his pro debut July 4. The 2013 first-round pick (14th overall) hasn’t slowed down since for the GCL Pirates.

McGuire is batting an impressive .457 (16 for 35) through his first nine games. He’s failed to record a hit just once and has managed multiple hits five times. McGuire also has five doubles, five RBI, 11 runs and two stolen bases. He has walked four times and struck out three times.

McGuire was considered the 10th-best prospect in the 2013 draft class by Baseball America. McGuire hit .422 (35 for 83) with a .795 slugging percentage, three triples, four home runs, 13 doubles, 20 RBI and 31 runs in 28 games as a senior for Kentwood High School in Covington.”
