The winter sports season — and boys basketball — is on the horizon for Kent’s high schools. Here’s a look at the teams’ records from last season, where they finished in the standings and their first home games of the new season.
Kent was represented well on the basketball court, and three out of the four Kent high schools advanced to last season’s district round. Kentlake was the lone school that did not make it, having a record of 6-14, and going 0-9 in league play.
Kentwood led the way, holding the best record of the Kent schools last season. KW finished the year going 13-7 and a league record of 4-3. The Conquerors went into districts as an eight seed and were the first victims of the would-be state champs, the Curtis Vikings. The second Kentwood game at districts was against Camas, which eliminated the Conquerors by a score of 77-65.
The Kentridge Chargers came in fourth place in the NPSL with a 10-8 overall record and were 4-4 in league. The Chargers’ final game was the opening round. It was a heartbreaking defeat, 56-53, by Bellarmine Prep.
At the 3A level, Kent-Meridian was 3-4 in league play and 7-11 overall. This was just enough to slide the Royals into the district tournament, where they took on Lincoln. The Abes were able to defeat the Royals, 75-55, ending Kent-Meridian’s 2022 season.
Kentlake’s first home game this season is 7 p.m. Nov. 29 against Mercer Island. Kentwood’s season begins on the road for its first two games, and the first home game is Dec. 9 against Skyview with tip-off at 6:30 p.m. Kent-Meridian opens the season at home on Dec. 1 as it takes on Lindbergh at 7 p.m. Kentridge also opens at home as the Chargers take on Emerald Ridge at 7 p.m. Nov. 29.
