Fast times were good times for Bonet Henderson.

The Kentridge High School senior sprinter, one of the state’s best burners on the oval, will leave the Chargers with school records in the 100 (12.02 seconds) and 200 meters (24.53) and share the 400 relay mark (48.38) with teammates Sydnee Johnson, Jayma Erker and Lauryn Ford.

Henderson finished fifth in the 4A state finals in both sprints. She finished with the fourth-fastest time in the 200 for the entire state and was sixth among all divisions in the 100.

For her efforts, both on and off the track, Henderson is the Kent Reporter Female Athlete of the Year as chosen in an online vote by readers.

“Bonet Henderson is a shining example of working hard to achieve her goals,” said her coach, Jami Weinbrecht.

Henderson is looking forward to taking her skills to the University of Mary in North Dakota, where she will run track and study nursing. The Marauders have a strong Division II indoor and outdoor program. The university also has one of the nation’s top nursing schools.

To stay in tune, Henderson will compete this summer for the Xtreme Speed Club.

“(Track) brought me friendships and great coaches who were supported me,” Henderson said.

For Santiago Murillo, his best days in soccer are still ahead of him.

The sophomore defender – the Kent Reporter Male Athlete of the Year – was an integral part of Kent-Meridian’s drive to the playoffs. The Royals (7-6-5) advanced to the final 16 in the West Central District tournament before falling a match short of a state berth.

Needing a key stop or a goal, Murillo was there on the spot.

Murillo and the Royals vow to be much better next season.

“We’ll come back better and stronger,” he said, “and make it to state.”
