Kentridge’s Tyler Cronk continues to scale greater heights.
The 6-fo0t-8 junior cleared a personal-best 7 feet, 2 inches to capture the 4A West Central District high jump title Thursday at French Field.
Cronk’s leap is ranked second in the country among high school competitors, according to the track and field website Athletic.net. Yukon, Oklahoma’s Vernon Turner is the national leader at 7-6.
Cronk set a school record of 7-1 at the Ray Cockrum Relays in Wenatchee on March 25.
The top eight finishers in each event from the two-day district meet qualify for the state championships May 25-27 at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma.
In other finals:
Kentwood’s Keetaan DeWitz, the North Puget Sound League meet champion, finished third in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.30 seconds.
The Conquerors’ Harsimran Singh ran personal bests of 1:55.11 and 4:23.72 to finish eighth in both the 800 and 1,600, respectively. He anchored the winning 1,600 relay (3:22.89) with Omari Brown, Daniel Gaik and Camden Phelps.
The Conks’ Christian Duenas-Palaita was fourth in the discus with a personal-best 147-0, and James Rebro went 42-9 for eighth in the long jump.
For Kentridge, the 400 relay – Nathan Peak, Jimmie Stennis, Solomon Hines and Miguel Punsalan – finished fifth (43.41).
Girls highlights
Kentridge sophomore Lauryn Ford ran a season-best 12.21 to take fifth in the 100. She later added a seventh in the 200 (25.28) and joined Adama Bojang, Makayla Williams and Kiarra Scott in taking fifth in the 400 relay (49.33).
Scott qualified for state in the triple jump, finishing eighth with a leap of 35-11¾.
Kentwood’s Nicole Soleim grabbed third in the 3,200 (11:22.59) and delivered a personal-best 5:05.43, good enough for fifth in the 1,600.
Also advancing for Kentwood was junior sprinter Hailey Suit (12.34, 100, seventh), sophomore Hannah Roberts in the javelin (personal-best 118-9, fifth) and sophomore Nicole Ajayi in the high jump (5-2, sixth). The Conks’ Destiny Capers was seventh in the discus with a throw of 117-7.
Kentwood’s 800 relay – Jessica Robinson, Alyssa Gonzalez, Alexia “Bebe” Thomas and Suit – finish sixth (1:44.74).
Kentlake’s Jordan Fong was third in the discus with a toss of 124-9 and seventh in the javelin (115-10). Teammate Marylinn Auelua was fourth in the shot put (38-2).
Kent-Meridian’s Olivia Baerny was seventh in the 800 (2:19.33) and eighth in the 1,600 (5:08.42) – both personal bests.
The Royals’ Olivia Carter ran a personal-best 25.56 to finish eighth in the 200. She also was part of the 400 relay with Brittany Tellis, Bri Kamran and Jaleesa Taylor that took sixth in 49.50.
Kamran later added an eighth in the high jump (5-2).
