Kentridge erupted for 15 hits in trouncing Tahoma 19-5 in six innings on Monday to move closer to clinching the South Puget Sound League 4A North Division high school baseball title.
The Chargers (11-3 league, 12-5 overall) lost 7-2 to Mount Rainier on Tuesday. They played Kentwood on Wednesday and Auburn on Thursday. Those games wrap up regular season play.
Against Tahoma, Matt Fleming and Isaiah Terry belted home runs and Joe Wainhouse drove in three runs and scored two more for Kentridge.
This was the second time Kentridge faced Tahoma. When they first met a month ago, Kentridge barely walked away with a 1-0 win.
The Chargers broke it open with a six-run spree in the third inning and added nine more in the sixth.
Fleming’s 4-for-4 day included a double and four RBI. Terry and Andrew Barrera each drove in three runs. Joel Condreay went 2-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored.
The Chargers’ offense wasn’t the only thing running smoothly Monday.
Starting pitcher Ryan Schroeder went 4 2/3 innings to pick up the win. Sound defense did the rest. Wainhouse and Danny Torlai shut the door in relief.
“That’s what we’ve done up to this point is we’ve played good defense. We don’t walk a ton of guys,” said coach John Flanigan.
Despite the victory, Flanigan wasn’t about to let his team relax. In the SPSL the tables can turn. The division is always competitive.
“I’ve been at Kentridge since 1997 and there’s been on numerous occasions two teams from the SPSL North (that go deep in the playoffs),” Flanigan said. “It’s a very good baseball league. You gotta bring it every single time out.”
Flanigan plans to continue emphasizing aggressive strike zone discipline to his team as it approaches district and possibly regional play.
“Know your strike zone,” Flanigan said. “If it’s not in the strike zone, let that go. We got guys who can hit down on the count.”
